Unless you live under a rock or are totally out of the Social Media game, (which I doubt as you are reading my Social Media blog) odds are likely that you have heard a thing or too about Google’s new crack at Social Media, Google+. Google+ has gotten a ton of buzz these past few days and as a Social Media girl I have been paying very close attention to the developments.
The low down is that it is very similar to Facebook in the way you post news, pictures, and comment on your friends stream. After all it is a social tool that connects you with others with like minded individuals.
Unlike Google Buzz and Google Wave which both failed quickly after its launch, Google+ is getting a lot of praise among the tech set.
A recent study published by The Next Web even said 66% of users prefer Google+ to Facebook.
WOW! What a statement.
I know what you are thinking. – But I put all that time into my Facebook fan page…Now what? Does this mean you have to abandon your Facebook? No of course not. While these results are something to note – the test group is early adapters and very tech savvy. We don’t know how everyday people are going to respond to Google+. Are they willing to adapt to a new technology and leave the old one behind? I am not so sure. Or at least not yet.
My advice is to keep your fan page up and once Google+ launches “business” pages get in there early and keep producing content!
(Don’t worry I will teach you all about Google+ for business once I get in there myself and test it out. )
Currently, Google+ it is closed off to new members but will be opening to all very shortly.
How to brand yourself on G+
1. Follow relevant people and add them to different circles of your choice. The nice thing about G+ is that you can share certain content with different people meaning your stream is less noisy.
2. Make sure your google profile is up to date. This is connected to your G+ profile so make sure you have it up to par.
3. Share content that is relevant to your industry.
4. Comment on articles relevant to your industry.
5. Keep your eye on developments so you are in the know.
6. Get yourself a temporary vanity URL here — Google will come out with its official version soon, but in the meantime this looks a lot nicer.
